What Does Reconditioned Mean?
A reconditioned IBC tank is a used container that has been professionally disassembled, cleaned, inspected, repaired, and reassembled to meet or exceed its original performance specifications. Unlike a simple "used" IBC tote sold as-is, a reconditioned tank goes through a controlled industrial process that restores it to a condition functionally equivalent to new.
Our reconditioning facility in Omaha processes hundreds of IBC tanks every month. Each tank goes through a standardized 12-step process that includes triple-wash cleaning with FDA-approved agents, cage repair or replacement, new valve and gasket installation, and a final pressure test. The result is a tank that looks, performs, and seals like it just came off the manufacturing line -- at 40-60% of the cost of a brand new unit.
Reconditioning is also the most environmentally responsible way to handle used IBC containers. It extends the useful life of each tank by 3-5 additional years, diverting hundreds of pounds of steel and plastic from the waste stream per unit. For businesses that prioritize both cost savings and sustainability, reconditioned IBC tanks are the clear winner.
Unlike simple cleaning services that rinse and resell, our reconditioning process involves complete disassembly, individual component inspection, and blanket replacement of all wear components. This means every reconditioned tank from Omaha IBC Tanks starts its next service cycle with fresh seals, a verified bottle, and a structurally sound cage — not just a quick wash and a handshake.
Our 12-Step Reconditioning Process
Every IBC tank that enters our reconditioning line goes through the same rigorous process, regardless of its previous contents or intended resale grade. Here is every step in detail.
Intake & Documentation
Every incoming IBC tank is logged into our tracking system with a unique batch ID. We record the source facility, previous contents (from labels and supplier documentation), date of receipt, and initial visual condition. This documentation travels with the tank through every subsequent step, creating a complete audit trail.
Sorting & Triage
Trained technicians categorize each tank into one of three processing tracks: full reconditioning (for tanks in good structural condition), component salvage (for tanks with reusable cages or pallets but damaged bottles), or material recycling (for tanks beyond reconditioning). This triage ensures no resources are wasted on tanks that cannot be brought back to standard.
Complete Disassembly
The HDPE bottle is separated from the steel cage. The butterfly valve, top cap, and gaskets are removed for individual inspection. The pallet base is detached for separate cleaning and evaluation. All removable labels and stickers are stripped. Each component enters its own dedicated inspection and restoration track.
HDPE Bottle Inspection
The bare bottle is examined inch by inch for cracks, stress marks, chemical erosion, UV yellowing, and wall thickness degradation. We use bright-light interior inspection to detect hairline fractures not visible from the outside. Wall thickness is measured at multiple points using an ultrasonic thickness gauge. Bottles that fall below minimum thickness thresholds (1.8mm) are rejected.
Triple-Wash Cleaning
The HDPE bottle undergoes a three-stage cleaning process: (1) an initial hot-water rinse at 160-180F to remove residual product and loosen organic deposits, (2) a caustic wash with FDA-approved cleaning agents to break down chemical and biological residues, and (3) a final high-pressure rinse with potable water. Each stage uses water from our closed-loop reclamation system. For food-grade reconditioning, additional sanitization and pH verification steps are performed.
Odor & Residue Testing
After cleaning, the interior is inspected visually under strong illumination for any remaining residue or staining. A trained technician performs an odor test — the bottle must be odor-neutral for Grade A classification. For food-grade tanks, a pH swab test is performed to verify the interior surface is within neutral range (6.5-7.5). Tanks that fail these tests are re-processed or downgraded.
Cage Restoration
The galvanized steel cage is inspected for rust, bent bars, and broken welds. Minor damage is repaired by our certified welding team using matching galvanized steel stock. Cages are straightened using hydraulic presses to restore original geometry. Surface rust is treated and sealed. Cages with excessive corrosion or structural compromise are replaced entirely with new cage assemblies from our parts inventory.
Pallet Base Restoration
The pallet base is inspected for cracks, splits, warping, and runner damage. Wood pallets receive board replacements as needed. Steel pallets are checked for weld integrity and corrosion. All forklift pockets are verified clear and properly dimensioned. Pallets that cannot be safely restored are replaced with new units matching the original specification.
Component Replacement
Every reconditioned tank receives a brand-new 2-inch butterfly valve assembly and a new 6-inch top cap gasket — regardless of whether the originals were still functional. O-rings, dust caps, and any secondary seals are also replaced. This blanket replacement policy ensures leak-free performance and eliminates the most common failure points in used IBC tanks.
Reassembly & Pressure Testing
The cleaned bottle is reinstalled in the restored cage on its refurbished pallet. The new valve and cap are fitted. The complete assembly is then filled with water and pressurized to 3 PSI to test for leaks at the valve seat, cap seal, and all seam points. The tank is held at pressure for a minimum of 15 minutes. Any unit that shows even a single drop of leakage is rejected from the line.
Final Quality Inspection
A senior quality control inspector performs the final comprehensive check. This includes a full visual review of the bottle, cage, pallet, valve, and cap; a functional test of the valve operation; and verification of proper labeling. The inspector grades the tank (A, B, or C) based on its cosmetic condition and previous-use history.
Certification, Labeling & Staging
Approved tanks receive a reconditioning certificate label applied to the cage. The label includes: reconditioning date, batch number, cleaning agents used, grade classification, and our facility identification. The tank is then shrink-wrapped to protect against dust and contamination during storage. Finished tanks are staged in our ready-inventory area, sorted by grade and size for rapid order fulfillment.
Available Grades & Pricing
Reconditioned IBC tanks are available in three grade tiers. All grades receive the same 12-step cleaning and restoration process. The grade reflects the tank's previous use history and final cosmetic condition.
Grade A - Food Grade Reconditioned
$200 - $275Our highest tier. These tanks previously held food-safe liquids and have been triple-washed to FDA-compliant standards. New valve, new gasket, cleaned cage, no residual odor. Suitable for potable water, food processing, beverage production, and pharmaceutical-adjacent storage.
Before Reconditioning
Arrives with residual food-grade product residue, possible cloudiness in the HDPE, labels from previous user, original valve with wear marks, minor cage scuffs from handling.
After Reconditioning
Crystal-clear interior with no visible residue or staining. Odor-neutral. Bright white HDPE bottle. Straight, clean cage with no rust. Brand-new butterfly valve and gasket. Professional reconditioning label applied. Shrink-wrapped for clean storage.
Grade B - Industrial Reconditioned
$150 - $220Previously held non-hazardous industrial products. Fully cleaned with new valve and gasket. May have minor cosmetic staining on the bottle that does not affect performance. Ideal for manufacturing, agriculture, and commercial applications where cosmetic appearance is secondary to function.
Before Reconditioning
Shows moderate use — tinted HDPE from previous industrial contents, surface oxidation on cage, worn valve, label adhesive residue, possible minor dents in cage bars.
After Reconditioning
Interior cleaned and residue-free. Light cosmetic staining may remain on bottle walls (does not affect performance). Cage straightened and surface-treated. New valve and gasket installed. Fully pressure-tested and certified.
Grade C - Standard Reconditioned
$120 - $175Previously held a wider range of products including some chemical applications. Thoroughly cleaned and pressure-tested with new valve assembly. May retain light residual odor or visible staining. Best for non-sensitive storage, waste fluid collection, and industrial rinsing applications.
Before Reconditioning
Shows significant use history — heavily stained HDPE, strong residual odor from chemical contents, surface rust on cage, worn components, possible minor cage deformation.
After Reconditioning
Interior cleaned to remove loose residue. Staining may be visible but surface is clean to the touch. Light odor may persist. Cage repaired and structurally sound. New valve installed. Pressure-tested for leak-free operation.

Parts Replacement Guide
Every reconditioning includes mandatory component replacements plus as-needed structural repairs. Here is the full parts list with typical costs.
| Part | Replaced When | Est. Cost | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2" Butterfly Valve Assembly | Every reconditioned tank | $18-$25 | Most common failure point. Blanket replacement ensures reliable seal and operation. |
| 6" Screw Cap Gasket | Every reconditioned tank | $4-$8 | Gaskets compress over time and lose sealing ability. New gasket prevents top-cap leaks. |
| Valve O-Ring Set | Every reconditioned tank | $2-$4 | O-rings degrade with chemical exposure. Proactive replacement prevents drip leaks. |
| Dust Cap (valve cover) | When missing or damaged | $3-$5 | Protects valve from contamination during storage and transport. |
| Steel Cage Section (bar replacement) | When bent or cracked | $15-$30 per bar | Maintains stacking safety and bottle protection. Welded in place by certified team. |
| Pallet Runner / Board | When cracked or split | $8-$20 per board | Ensures safe forklift handling and load-bearing capacity of the base. |
| Complete Steel Cage | When damage exceeds repair threshold | $60-$90 | Total cage replacement when corrosion or structural damage is too extensive for spot repair. |
| Complete Pallet Base | When damage exceeds repair threshold | $30-$50 | Full pallet replacement when cracks or warping compromise safe handling. |
| 6" Screw Cap (full cap) | When threads are damaged | $8-$15 | Damaged threads prevent proper sealing. New cap ensures airtight closure. |
| HDPE Bottle (rebottling) | When bottle is beyond cleaning | $80-$120 | A new bottle in an existing cage/pallet creates a rebottled tank — new interior, used exterior framework. |
Parts costs shown are component costs only. All parts and labor are included in the reconditioning price — no additional charges for standard replacements.
